Comparing radiator types: aluminium, steel or towel radiator?

When choosing a new radiator you will quickly face three main categories: aluminium design radiators, steel panel radiators and towel radiators. What are the real differences?

Aluminium design radiator

Aluminium conducts heat more efficiently than steel, particularly at lower flow temperatures. Key advantages:

• Fast warm-up — aluminium responds quickly to temperature changes
• Compatible with heat pumps — works efficiently at 35–45°C flow temperature
• Low water volume — less water in the system, less energy loss
• Maintenance-free — no internal rust risk, no bleeding required
• Lightweight — easier to install than heavy steel models

Disadvantage: typically higher purchase price than steel.

Steel panel radiator

The classic panel radiator is the most widely sold radiator type. Advantages:

• Low purchase price — standard models are widely available at low cost
• Wide range — many sizes and types available

Disadvantages:

• Slower to warm up at low flow temperatures
• Maintenance — requires periodic bleeding
• Less suitable for heat pumps in standard sizing
• Limited design choice — little variation in colour or appearance

Towel radiator

The towel radiator is designed specifically for bathrooms, with a dual function: room heating and towel drying. Advantages:

• Dual function — heat and drying combined
• Compact — takes up relatively little wall space

Disadvantages:

• Limited output — not suitable as the sole heat source in larger bathrooms
• Standard appearance — less design freedom than an aluminium radiator
• Slow response in steel version
