Low temperature radiator: when do you need one?
A low temperature (LT) radiator is not a separate product category — it is a radiator that performs well at low flow temperatures, typically between 30°C and 45°C. That matters to an increasing number of households: heat pumps, hybrid boilers and energy-efficient renovations run at lower temperatures than traditional central heating systems.
What does low flow temperature mean?
With a conventional boiler, heating water often reaches 70–90°C. With a heat pump or hybrid system, flow temperature is much lower: usually 35–45°C, sometimes lower in well-insulated homes.
The lower the water temperature, the less heat a radiator delivers per square metre — unless the material and surface area are designed for it. "LT-ready" is therefore a meaningful property, not a marketing label.
When do you need an LT radiator?
You need a radiator that performs at low temperatures if:
- you are installing or already have a heat pump
- you heat hybrid (heat pump + boiler)
- you combine underfloor heating with radiators on lower flow temperature
- your existing radiators no longer deliver enough heat after lowering boiler settings
In all these cases, sizing must be done at LT values (for example 35/30°C) — not at the standard 75/65°C used in many older calculations.

Why aluminium works better at low temperatures
Aluminium conducts heat more efficiently than steel. At the same dimensions and the same low flow temperature, an aluminium radiator delivers more useful heat than a steel panel radiator.

When steel falls short
Steel radiators are often sized for high temperatures. They work, but at 35–40°C flow temperature:
- they deliver less output than the label suggests (calculated at 75°C)
- they warm up more slowly, which feels uncomfortable in shoulder seasons
- they sometimes require higher boiler settings, reducing heat pump efficiency
That does not mean every steel radiator must be replaced immediately, but with a heat pump installation, checking or replacing radiators is usually necessary.

Sizing: more surface area, not just higher nominal output
With LT systems, actual output at low flow temperature matters — not nominal output at 75°C. That can mean:
- a larger model than you are used to
- a vertical format where wall width is limited
- multiple radiators in large open rooms
Always have sizing done at the flow temperature your installer uses for your system. Use product advice to find the right model.
