How to calculate radiator output for a living room
A radiator that is too weak does not heat the room adequately. A radiator that is oversized wastes energy and responds poorly to temperature control. Here is how to calculate the right output for your living room.
The rule of thumb
For an averagely insulated living room (cavity wall insulation, double glazing) a common starting point is:
70–100 watts per m²
A living room of 25 m² needs roughly 1,750–2,500 watts. This is the starting point — actual requirements depend on several factors.
Factors that affect output requirements
Insulation level
Better insulation means lower output needed:
- Poorly insulated (no or limited insulation, single glazing): 120–150 W/m²
- Average (cavity wall, double glazing): 70–100 W/m²
- Well insulated (post-2010, HR glazing, floor and roof insulation): 40–70 W/m²
- Passive or near-zero energy: 20–40 W/m²
Windows and external walls
Windows lose more heat than insulated walls. A living room with large windows or a conservatory connection needs more output than an interior room.
Heat pump flow temperature
Heat pumps operate at lower flow temperatures (35–45°C) than gas boilers (60–80°C). At lower temperatures, a radiator delivers less output than its nominal value (which is measured at 75°C flow). With heat pumps, plan for 30–50% higher radiator capacity than the standard rule of thumb.
Floor area vs room volume
For rooms with high ceilings (above 2.7 m), volume becomes more relevant than floor area. Calculate: room volume (m³) × 30–40 W = required output.
Example calculation
Living room: 28 m², well insulated, heat pump, ceiling height 2.6 m
- Floor area: 28 m²
- Rule of thumb for good insulation: 50 W/m² = 1,400 watts
- Heat pump correction (+40%): 1,400 × 1.4 = ~1,960 watts needed
In this case, choose a radiator or combination of radiators with a total output of around 2,000 watts at 45°C flow.
