Heating accounts for a large share of household energy use. A smarter radiator — the right material, the right connection, the right controls — can meaningfully reduce your energy bills without affecting comfort.
Why your radiator affects energy use
A central heating system heats water and circulates it through radiators. The more efficiently the radiator transfers heat from water to air, the less energy is needed to reach the same room temperature.
Two factors are key here:
- Material: aluminium conducts heat roughly 5× more efficiently than steel at the same water temperature.
- Water volume: less water per kilowatt of heat output means the pump works less and the system reacts faster.

Low-temperature heating
The biggest single impact on energy saving comes from lowering the flow temperature of the system. Every 1°C reduction in flow temperature saves around 2.5% energy.
A heat pump does this automatically. But a gas boiler can also be set to a lower flow temperature — if the radiators are large enough and conduct heat well enough.
Heat pumps run most efficiently at 35–45°C. Aluminium radiators are well suited to this; steel models sized for 70–80°C typically are not.
Smart controls: thermostats and zones
Good controls also make a significant difference. Smart thermostats — connected to an electric element or via a central heating controller — ensure only rooms in use are heated.
