Radiator maintenance: how long does a radiator last?

A good radiator lasts a long time — provided you make the right choices when buying and installing it. What is the expected lifespan, and what maintenance is actually needed?

Lifespan of an aluminium radiator

Aluminium radiators outlast steel panel radiators. The main reason: aluminium does not rust internally. In steel radiators, internal corrosion occurs from oxygen in the heating water, leading to sludge build-up and eventually leaking.

Does an aluminium radiator need maintenance?

Barely. Aluminium radiators:

Cleaning the outside

The outside of a radiator is best cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads that can damage the paint finish. For matte dark shades (such as Midnight Noir): avoid oily fingerprints where possible — a microfibre cloth removes them easily.
