Vertical radiator for the bathroom: benefits, sizes and tips

A vertical radiator is the most practical choice in most bathrooms. Not just for aesthetic reasons — mainly because it uses height rather than width, which gives you more freedom in how you arrange the room.

Why go vertical in a bathroom?

Wall space in a bathroom is limited. Tiles, mirrors, cabinets and windows already claim large sections of the walls. A horizontal radiator takes up further horizontal space — space you often want to use differently.

A vertical radiator sits narrow and reaches high. Its wall footprint is small. That makes it well suited for:

  • smaller bathrooms with limited horizontal wall space
  • rooms with high ceilings where height can be used
  • spaces where the radiator also serves as a towel rail
  • interiors where the radiator is intended to be a visible design feature

Common sizes

Vertical bathroom radiators come in a wide range of sizes. Popular formats include:

  • Height 1000–1200 mm, width 300–450 mm — compact, suitable for smaller spaces
  • Height 1600–1800 mm, width 300–600 mm — for larger bathrooms or higher heat output
  • Height 2000 mm and above — statement radiator for open spaces or lofts

Width also influences heat output. Wider at the same height means more warmth. Check where the connections sit — on vertical models they are usually at the bottom, which affects where the pipework needs to run.

Aluminium vs steel

For a vertical bathroom radiator, aluminium is often the better choice. It heats up quickly, responds well to low flow temperatures — as used by heat pumps — and is lighter, which matters when mounting tall models.

Steel vertical radiators are solid and suited to higher working pressures, but they respond more slowly and are heavier to install.

All Heatnest models are aluminium. That means fast warm-up times, energy-efficient operation and a long service life without bleeding or rust.

Electric or central heating?

A vertical radiator can run on central heating or on an electric element. Electric is a good option when:

  • you want to control the bathroom independently from the rest of the heating
  • there is no convenient central heating connection nearby
  • you want the flexibility of a timer or smart thermostat per room

Central heating makes more sense when the bathroom is already part of an integrated heating system or heat pump installation. For more on that choice, read our guide on electric vs central heating radiators.

How do you choose the right vertical radiator?

Start with the available wall space: how high can you go, and how much width do you have? Then calculate the required heat output for the room. Our product advice page can help with sizing.

Next, consider:

  1. the material (aluminium for fast warm-up and heat pump compatibility)
  2. the connection type (central heating or electric)
  3. the colour and style that suits the bathroom
  4. optional towel bars or accessories

Which model suits my bathroom?

Heatnest has several models suited to bathrooms. The Libra and Pure are vertical designs that combine compact proportions with clean styling. The Nexo is a horizontal option for bathrooms where width is available.

Frequently asked questions

Why are vertical radiators popular in bathrooms?

Because they use height instead of width, leaving more wall space free for tiles, cabinets and mirrors.

What material is best for a vertical bathroom radiator?

Aluminium is the best choice: it heats up fast, is light to install, and is compatible with heat pumps at low flow temperatures.
