Buying a design radiator: the complete guide

You have decided you want a design radiator. Now the real decision process begins. Which size? Which material? Which system? And where do you buy one that actually fits your space? This guide walks you through it step by step.

Step 1: Define the room and the heating system

Before you look at models, start with the technical requirements:

• Which room? Bathroom, living room, bedroom or hallway — each space has different demands.

• Available wall space? Height and width determine which models will fit.

Step 2: Calculate the required heat output

A common mistake is choosing a radiator on appearance without checking whether the output is right. A radiator that is too small will never reach the target temperature; one that is too large wastes energy.

A rough guide: around 70–100 watts per m² for a well-insulated space at normal central heating temperatures. With low-temperature heating (heat pump), you need more radiator surface per m².

Step 3: Choose the material

• Vertical or horizontal? Vertical is compact on the wall and suited to narrow spaces. Horizontal delivers more output per linear metre and fits well below windows.
• Which model? Geometric? Cylindrical? With panel? The choice shapes the feel of the room.

Step 5: Choose the colour

The colour of your radiator is an interior design decision. White and ivory are timeless and versatile. Black is a design statement. Earth tones like sand beige or stone grey suit almost any neutral interior.
